Salsa dance classes
Brussel - Stadium 1

Salsa is a popular dance which made it's first appearance in the 1930's. It is a fusion between jazz and contemporary 'Rock' and it is created by musicians and dancers who were tired of the usual sounds and dances. This is how the Mambo appeared in the 40s, the Chachacha in the 50s, the Pachanga in the 60s or the 80s in Songo and Timba in the 90s. They reinvented new rhythms and new steps to revitalize the whole. Salsa and all Afro-Caribbean dances were created to wiggle and dance to these rhythms.

There are three main (recognised) styles in Salsa, Cuban Style, Puerto Rican Style and Colombian style.

Colombian style is the most widely danced style in Latin America. It is a dance that takes the dancing partners very close to one another, where aesthetics and character are much more prominent than the creation of figures. The footwork is generally more complex than for other styles, sometimes resembling some to the twist.

Cuban Salsa, called Calena (originally from Cali) has several differences, the Cuban and New York salsa a has it's timing based not on the rhythm but rather on the melody of the music (this is the most notable difference). This has as an end effect that the dance has fast changes and more sudden movements that follow the song.

Salsa is normally a partner dance, although there are recognized solo forms such as solo dancing "suelta" and "Rueda de Casino" where multiple couples exchange partners in a circle. Salsa can be improvised or performed with a set routine.

Salsa is popular throughout Latin America as well as in North America, Europe, Australia, and some countries in Asia and the Middle East. It is fast becoming a global phenomenon.
